I have a Divine-heavy group I DM for - one Cleric, one Avenger, one Invoker - and many of their spells have the Radiant keyword, plus various weapon-glow and holy fire effects. These would only be flashes of light, not a sustained effect (unless otherwise stated on the power cards, of course).

I'm thinking of putting together a Weeping Angel type encounter together for them, and I want a trap to trigger total darkness. Would their spell effects be flashes through a darkness spell, or would I need a purely mundane darkness for that?

EDIT: I should clarify. I want them to be able to see briefly through the darkness should they use their spell effects. Brief flashes of the enemies swarming around them, until they eventually get the lights back on (or cancel the trap spell). I think it would throw them into a minor panic.

You're not looking at the statues.

Normally, I don't think so, but in this case, I'd say it was okay.

Let there be a holy fountain of St. Fluorescence or something optional to make their stuff glowy or something if you want to give them the option for a sort of safety- penalties to sneaking and hiding etc etc tradeoffs etc etc

"The Holy Font of St. Fluorescence" sounds like the best glam rock band name -ever-.

The darkness being a spell isn't entirely necessary. I like your idea, but it'll probably save myself a headache if I just make it regular darkness. I'll probably just have the trap snuff out the torches or something.

Thanks!

Well the flashes of light are just flavor and have no mechanical basis, so whether the flashes of light should work in a "darkness" spell also has no mechanical basis. So the answer is: "no, you don't need a darkness spell, but you can use one if you want".

Otherwise sounds like a neat idea for an encounter :)
